The Hours of Hard Work

Over this past week I have been reading The Diary Of a Young Girl - Anne Frank. The vocabulary in the book is very hard for me to interrupt, but I pry my was through this book as it challenges me. I spent 1 hour on Monday reading Diary of Anne Franks which left me at about 30 pages. Then on Wednesday I read for about 20 minutes in the car on the way to school, which left me at 41. Then today I read for 1 1/2 hours which left me on page 93.

5 Books On My Shelf I Recommend To You

1. Huger Games Trilogy By: Susan Collins- The Hunger Games was an amazing trilogy. I got lost in the world of the 12    districts, and how teens had to fight to the death in this new corrupted society.  Each book is more complex than the other. This was truly a work of creative writing. I read it when I was 11, and I recommended it to my 40-year old mother who ended up falling in love with the series as much as I did. I never liked reading before those three books, now I do read in my past time.  This trilogy ended up being the awakening for my passion of reading.

2. Sold By: Patricia McCormick- I saw this book when I was picking out my summer reading book Divergent. I read the first 10 pages and already found myself hooked into the book. It is about a 13 year old girl named Lakshmi, who has recently been sold into prostitution by her father. When I found out that this book was a non-fiction book and this happens often in India I was astonished. I just could not believe her own father would do such a horrific thing.  This book is what is behind the closed curtains, this is whats happening in the real world.

3. Mrs.Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children By: Ransom Riggs- This book was recommended to me by a friend. I liked this book a lot, but it is very unrealistic, that it almost comes off as a child had written it. Between the invisible man, the girl who has the ability to fly, and monster with squid tentacles coming out of his mouth I became curious in that this is what children stories were about. I later found out that there was a world beneath a world. This book is defiantly not for everyone, but I recommend it because of its imaginative plot line. Which is once Jacobs grandfather dies, after being attacked by a man with an octopus mouth,  he sets out to go to this mysterious island that his grandpa told him about as a child.

4. Divergent & Invergent By: Veronica Roth-It was obligatory that I read Divergent for summer reading. At first I didn't like it, I thought that this book was just emulating the Hunger Games, but I was quickly proven wrong. Yes, there are some common things between them, like how they are both separated by different characteristic; one into factions and other into districts, but there are many differences as well. I loved this book overall I believe that I was lost in that world, I would read for multiple hours at a time. Though, this book was brilliant, I would not recommend it to anybody out of, or yet in there teens. I believe this because it is not challenging nor interesting enough for people above 17, but a little too mature for 11 year olds to be reading this.

5. Romeo & Juliet By: William Shakespeare- This book was also mandatory for me to read. I had very low expectations for this book, because of my lack comprehending this Shakespeare's language. Though I did not know that my former teacher had one with definitions on the side that were most commonly unknown to the public eye. I loved this book, I thought this book was written beautifully in every way possible, I recommend it to everyone over 13.

3 Things You Probably Didn't Know

1.  Dreaming can make you more intelligent-  When you sleep, your brain processes everything you went through that day. So when you are studying for a test, instead of grinding over your textbook for another 3 hours, you should take a nap or go to sleep. When you are dreaming, "your brain is comprehending and integrating problems", says researchers at Harvard Medical School.  I am a light sleeper, and I wake up several times a night to nothing. When I went for my annual check-up, I asked my doctor if she could give me some tips on how to have a better quality of sleep? My doctor replied saying to avoid noise in your room, such as your TV. Using this technique will help your brain to process facts.

2. Dogs can smell cancer- I woke up today turning on Fox news hearing that this women's dog smelled her breast cancer. She said that her dog would poke her in this certain spot everyday, until one day she went to get a mammogram and had cancer in the same, exact spot where her dog was poking. She was stunned and did some research and found out that dogs can smell early cancer. She told Fox reporters, "In a way my dog saved my life."

3. Nothing could exist without gravity- I was watching a documentary about Astronomy, and they started talking about gravity. They said without gravity nothing would be in existence, because without gravity the earth would not be able to hold itself together. The first thing that would happen if gravity did not exist is that we would be flanged into the sky at 750 mph. Then everything would just turn into nothing because without gravity the solar system would not exist, nor planets, galaxy's, or even the universe in that matter.

9 Solutions To Anxiety or Stress

  1. Light Candles- This is an obvious way of "cooling down". I always enjoy the smell of them, and it is natural way to calm down.
  2. Read a Book- Reading a book can let you escape from your world and enter a new one, and let you become the protagonist. Relieving the stress and helping you take your mind off things. It is like an escape.
  3. Drinking Tea- Natural remedies are a common choice for stress. Drinking tea is a way of slowing down your life, which when I am stress I need. It also is a way being hydrated. Which decreases anxiety.
  4. Listening to music- Especially calming music always reduces my anxiety. It takes my minds off things and lets me get lost into the song. The songs serene melody lets me relax and get lost in my own self.
  5. Taking 5- For panic attacks, it is always advised to take 5. Breathe, focus on the moment and focus on your breathe, think of the now, not of the future or the past, just the present. Focus on inhaling and exhaling, focus on your heartbeat, all the things your body is coming in contact to, focus on what you here, what you see, and what you feel. After a while when your heart rate goes down, you become tranquil.
  6. Yoga- I have loved yoga since the first class I have taken and always have loved it. Its stretching and relaxing has always relaxed me and made me feel good. Especially the cow and cat pose. As it stretches my spine and inhale into the cate pose and exhale into the cow.
  7. Taking a nap- When all else fails sleep. As this is a temporary solution, it helps you think and lets your mind rest. It can think things and you can be uncertain of what you want before and certain of what you want after the nap.
  8. Running/Exercise- Running is a release for me. When I am build up with stress I run and let it all sweat out. As my body releases itself from the anxiety that world has given me. I feel better afterwards and not only does this make you feel better after, you also are burning the McDonalds hamburger you ate for lunch today.
  9. Ponder- Think. Think about your situation think of the solution and all the obstacles you might face to reach your goal. Thinking also will create goals for yourself which will you be organized in the future, and will also detox yourself from pressure. It will help you figure things out.

Reading Review Number One

Hi i am Kaylin, this is my first blog post on my blog. Over the summer I was assigned to read 3 books, Divergent, Knife of Never Letting Go, and my choice book which was Sold. I enjoyed all three of these books, especially Divergent by Veronica Roth.  She wrote the book very well. It captured you and left cliff hangers from the beginning. I noticed that some of the factions resembled groups in school, which I funny. I especially like Tobias', and Tris' relationship. It was nice how they  a romance when the book was so intense and made at least one thing right. Though the romance was a little cliche and called for it still made the book good. The thing that confused me though,  was how Al killed himself. I get that he was depressed and hated his faction, but why didn't he just go live with the faction less. I just didn't get it.

What I liked most about this book was how the author described the book. She went really in depth with the setting and Tris' thoughts. It was really captivating from the start, and thats what kept me reading. Another thing I liked especially well was how there factions kind of like the districts in the Hunger Games each one served some what of a purpose, but I liked it. Even though they the author of copied the Hunger Games a little. Overall I would rate this book 9, for its depicted description the author gives, the plot line, and the setting.
